Group B Strep is a common bacterial infection which is usually carried in the lower part of your intestines.
Adults usually carry it in the bowel/vaginal area with no symptoms. It can however lead to recurrent Urinary Tract Infections and also lead to further more serious issues such as bone/joint infections and pneumonia.
Strep B can cause dangerous infections in adults with certain chronic health conditions such as diabetes and also dangerous for pregnant ladies as this can be passed to onto the new born.
Symptoms in infants include;
- Fever
- Low Body Temperature
- Irritability
- Rash
- Been limp or floppy
- Difficulty in breathing
- Seizures
Treatment
If a newborn becomes poorly with Strep B, they will be given IV antibiotics (intravenous). Sometimes they may need additional support such as oxygen, IV Fluids and or other medications.
Having one or more of these symptoms does not mean you have Strep B but it is a simple guide to make you aware.
