What is Sepsis?

Sepsis is the body’s way of responding to an infection. It can be a life-threatening medical emergency. Although, it can be hard to spot there are a lot of potential symptoms that can be mistaken for other problems such as a chest infection or flu.

Red flag symptoms in young children;

  • Blue, grey or molted skin
  • A rash that does not fade – glass test (think meningitis)
  • Difficulty breathing – grunting, fast breathing, look out for sucking under the ribs
  • A weak or high pitched cry
  • Lethargic – not as responsive as normal
  • Sleepier than normal and difficult to wake
  • Fewer feeds and wet nappies

Red flag symptoms in adults and older children;

  • Confusion – difficulty in understanding them
  • Slurred speech
  • A rash that does not fade – glass test
  • Difficulty breathing – breathlessness or fast breathing

Since World Sepsis Day movement in 2012 sepsis awareness has increased significantly worldwide and has made the fight against Sepsis tangible.

Few Countries have made Sepsis a priority as requested in the World Health Organisation (WHO) sepsis resolution.

The awareness day holds an annual event in Berlin and also online.
